The beautiful mountain appeared transfixed in the distance.

這次花了多久時間呢？也是五秒嗎？

可是你有沒有發現到兩個句子的長度其實差很多呢？讓我們把這兩個句子放在一起比較看看。

The beautiful mountain appeared transfixed in the distance.

He can come on Sundays as long as he doesn’t have to do any homework in the evening.

由此可知，你其實只唸對了一部分！

透過這個小測試，我們可以知道平常說英文的時候到底哪裡出了錯。英文是一種具有重音的語言。也就是說，當我們唸英文句子的時候，必須分配重音給某些特定的字，其他不重要的字則可快速唸過。而其他語言，像是義大利文或法文，每一個音節都同等重要。

再以助動詞 can 作為例子。當 can 代表肯定語氣的時候，通常我們會快速唸過，甚至幾乎不發音。

They can come on Friday. （強調的是come）

相反地，當否定語氣的 can’t 出現時，我們會把重音放在 can’t 上加以強調。

They can’t come on Friday. （強調can’t和come）

由上述例子我們可以感覺到 “They can’t come on Friday.” 唸起來比 “They can come on Friday.” 長一點，是因為我們同時強調了 can’t 和 come 兩個字。可見發出正確的語調和放對重音乃是唸好英文句子的關鍵。在此之前，首先我們必須要學會分辨哪些字通常會是重音。

基本上來說，實詞 (content words) 通常為重音所在。

例如：

●    名詞 (nouns) : kitchen, Peter

●    多數的主要動詞 (most principal verbs) : visit, construct

●    形容詞 (adjectives) : beautiful, interesting

●    副詞 (adverbs) :often, carefully

功能詞∕虛詞 (function words) 通常則為非重音。

例如：

●    限定詞 (determiners): some, the, a few, a

●    助動詞 (auxiliary verbs): don’t , can,

●    介係詞 (prepositions): before, next to, opposite

●    連接詞 (conjunctions): while, but, as

●    代名詞 (pronouns): she, he, they

讓我們再回到一開始的英文句子試試看：

The beautiful mountain appeared transfixed in the distance.（14個音節）

He can come on Sundays as long as he doesn’t have to do any homework in the evening.（22個音節）

第二個句子比第一句長了約百分之三十，但是我們卻花差不多的時間唸完，原因是因為在這兩個句子中各約有五個重音字！從例句來看，你無須清楚地強調每一個字讓聽者了解（至少英語人士並不會這樣做）。你只需要強調某些重音字即可。
